Decided, since the weather is nice, to gather the flock of four four-week old chicks and let them experience coop living. The current coop is open the the ground (will be adding hardware wire) so there is a lot of grass to keep them busy. Waited until the temperature was over 65, put them out only during the day, bringing them back to the brooder when it is getting colder or dark. Well, they had a field day eating fresh grass, the unlucky bug that intruded into their space, and just being....well, chickens. They never seem to sleep outside, always running about, pecking at the grass, scratching about, watching me watch them. Just brought them back in to the house, and they totally crashed. Not a peep out of them. Laying on top of each other like cord wood. The rooster tried to cop an attitude in the coop, but the hens put him in his place pretty quickly. When one would chirp when finding a piece of grass that was appetizing, it was a food fight. Four square feet of grass, and that one little piece was worth chasing around. Watching them is cheaper than Netflix....and more entertaining. Finally turned off the heat lamp....they didn't even notice it was off. Just short term memory loss, I guess.
