I just had a 20-day old embryo die last night ( possibly was crushed or was not developing right and died a day or two before). I am fairly sure about the mother ( Mottled Cochin Bantam, who is tiny) but the father could be either a White Silkie rooster or my Buff Brahma rooster ( who is huge). I was wondering if the father was the Brahma, if the size descrepancy between the hen and rooster could have led to a poorly- developing chick? Has anyone had trouble hatching chicks from parents of two very different sizes? The embryo did not look to have any problems, from what I could see. However, instead of looking like it was 20 days old ( as it should have) , it looked like an 18 day old chick, maybe. The eyes were still big, yolk was still in there, blood vessels, not completely covered in down...skin showing, and digestive system hadnt been absorbed. Any insight as to whether rooster-hen size might have caused th death, or what may have caused it otherwise

If the rooster is a large breed and the hen is small then the developing chick could be too big for the egg and thus not hatch. But also, there could be a variety of reasons why it didn't hatch, and who really knows what it was.

I don't think it was anything relating to size. Sounds more like an incubation error, or just an embryo with poor genetics, or poor nutrition within the egg.

It could very well be incubation error, as I was depending on 2--3 broody hens to hatch this egg and they weren't consistently sitting on it.
