chicks have cocci, how long do i use sulmet?

i wasn't using medicated feed(but i am now) and we are on day 2 of sulmet. how long will it take to get rid of cocci? i got a new brooder, bleached everything and don't now what else i can do. i have six 4 week old chicks. a few seem a little better, but some not even close. do i treat until i see no more red poo?

What does the Sulmet bottle say?

Edited to add: Disregard my advice. I just remembered I used Corid and I think it said to treat for 5 days. I've never used Sulmet. Sorry!

I believe my bottle says 2 days at full strength, then 4 days at half strength. I have it, but Corid does a much better job here. Sulmet keeps their intestines bleeding longer and is harder on their systems and I was having to use it twice to do any good so I quit using it.

I had to use it for a week, then again for another week a short time later. It took some time to get this bug out of their system. I don't have access to Corid. Perhaps I will try for it if I need it again!!! I also made sure they got yoghurt. But perhaps thats only good for bacteria, but the bleeding is another matter.

But I lost a hen and may have had problems with intestinal bleeding .... I have no idea. I am just guessing from what the post above mine wrote. That could be a possiblility... I dosed them hard to get them to clear up. and It wasn't working, so I thought she would die one way or the other. darn.

I have a question...the medicated chick starter I use has amprolium...should I still order the Corid and give it to them with also feeding them this feed??

You can keep Corid on hand, but don't feed it unless you see signs of coccidiosis. There's really no need for adding to the feed as a preventative. The vulnerable times are about 4-8 weeks old for brooder-raised chicks. After that, it's more unusual to see cocci and by 12 weeks, they are pretty much immune to the oocycts in their own soil.

Chicks raised by a broody hen almost never get cocci because they are on the ground much earlier and pick at their mama's poop, which is almost like an innoculation against cocci (since she is already immune).
