I have a group of brooder chicks that got sick last Friday. The had been going out during the day, where they were in a movable 6'x10' pen. The group is made of 1 mixed boy(my avatar is his Grandmother), 2 Cream Light Brown Dutch Boys, and 2 Cream Light Brown Girls. All were 3.5 weeks old last friday.
When bringing them in last Friday I noticed the 2 girls were puffed up and wanting to stay at the light. Then one of them pooped with a bright red streak of blood in it. OK, either Cocci or a parasite. Not knowing which it was I decided to treat for both.
I don't like worming chicks that small, but I did. I used a small needle to put 2 tiny drops of Ivermec on their necks. I also wormed the boys. The needle allowed smaller drops.
For the Cocci I have Sulmet. It was about 6 months out of date, but it was well past closing time for all the feed stores. I used it anyway. I did do the full 6 days of treatment with the old Sulmet.
By Sunday they were doing well. The boys never seemed sick, just a little cold natured. I think they were anemic and couldn't maintain a good body temp.
By Tuesday you couldn't tell anything had been wrong with them. I was having to hunt and catch chicks every couple hours. Those little Dutch can fly very well and were exiting the brooder and getting LOST constantly. This past week has been a little cool outside, so the little ones have been getting bored stuck inside. Today they got to spend most of the day out and have been dead tired since they came in at dark.
