I have a run 16’ x 32’. Half the roof is solid and the other half is wire. (Lots of prey birds and feral cats around) I’ve been pulling grass and weeds out of the run and covering the base with river sand. I’m wondering if I should just leave half the run full of grass/weeds to let my chicks have some fun. They are 5 1/2 weeks old and seem ready to go outside the 6x8 coop. Will tall grass and weeds be harmful?

My 4 chicks have been outside free range since 24 hrs after they hatched. I doubt grass/weeds will harm them whatsoever.

grass and weeds dont hurt chickens of any age..... they only eat just a teensy bit a day.... they scratch around for bugs and stuff....

It is very good for the chicks and adults. Just stay away from using weed killers and pesticides in your backyard or around the coop.
I haven’t used any pesticides or weed killers near that area; that’s why it’s a wild mess!😂😂 I’d read that long pieces of grass can get caught up inside them, so that is only mowed grass? Do chickens just peck off small bits at a time?

Yes, chicks like to reck on small peaces of grass, insects and others crawly creatures found in the area. We made the grass ass well, at least once a week and dump some of the cut grass in the chicken run area. The fresh grass is full of nutrients and it is good for their digestive system. When we first moved to our property, we had too many crickets and after the chicken, we can hardly remember how they used to sound. LOL, the vacated our back yard for good.
