Somewhere in the sticks of IN
I am on the west side on Indiana and it has been terribly hot and dry. I am getting chicks via the USPS tomorrow. Normally we keep our new babies in the garage, where it is cooler currently, until they are big enough to put outside in the coop. I'm concerned that in this heat they may have problems, but I could be totally off base. In the past, we've only had chicks in the Spring and Fall.

Anyone have any suggestions for making sure they do ok? Is this something I should be concerned with? Any tips, hints, or advice is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

We have gotten some pretty good heat in Pennsylvania the last few days. I put the brooder setup in a corner of my garage that wasn't exposed to any long periods of sunlight. I also had to set up the heat lamp a little higher than what I originally measured. I kept a close eye on the chicks today and they seemed to be doing just fine. The garage floor was still relatively comfortable, and the temp under the lamp at the base of the brooder fluctuated between 93-95 degrees.

In regard to transit - when I got my chicks today they didn't seem to be phased by the temperature. They did seem very pleased to take a drink of water!

Thank you! I know that they need to stay pretty darn warm, and we have them in area that does not get any direct sunlight, though the door in front of them is open for fresh air. They seem to be doing ok. They arrived this morning from Meyer and all are happily peeping and eating/drinking like crazy! 18 new babies :) Forgot what it was like to have new babes in the brooder.

Glad to hear that yours are doing well, also!

We just went thru this and all was well. Obviously didn't need the light on during the day but temps at night were still below 80 so we put the light it. I won't lie, it did take some playing around and babysitting. I think when it's cooler it's easier. I also built a night top for our brooder so it was predator proof and left he garage door open all day (closed everything tight at night). All of my 12 have thrived thus far. I also gave them (during the 1st week and heat) some electrolytes. After than they got 1 TBL of Bragg apple cider vinegar per gallon of water. Seems to be working well.
