Chicks intestine on outside?

I had a broody that hatched out 3 eggs and killed two chicks. I found the third on the floor of the coop cold but alive. I popped it in the incubator and later came back to what looks like some dried intestines on the outside of the chicks body.is it possible it herniated through its umbilical cord and then the intestine dried out? Time to cull? Chick seems normal except for this, very awake and alert.

Unfortunately we confirmed it was a herniated intestine and since the intestine had dried out and the umbilical opening had closed we had to cull it. Especially hard for me as I have Crohn's disease and an ostomy so identified with the little chick quite a bit. We could have waited but both feeding and not feeding the chick were death sentences more painful than a quick cull.

I'm so sorry. I had to cull one from my most recent hatch that had its intestines on its outside. Just nothing I (or anyone) could do to help it. You're not alone here. It's the hard part of chicken keeping.

Im sorry that happened. It is so weird to me that some hens are great mothers and some are just evil and kill their own babies
