Just got my first batch of chicks from the post office this morning. Everyone seems to be doing great except for one sweetheart. She tucked herself in the warmest part of the MHP and didn’t come out for egg yolk or more water like the rest. I pulled her out and gave some nutri drench in water via syringe. She didn’t open her eyes much or make noise. When I notice her tail end palpating I checked her for pasty butt. Bingo. Wiped it down the best I could and I can see that her vent is clear now. Should I just let her sleep and recuperate from the trip or keep forcing some water? I have ACV but wanted to wait a bit since I’d already given her nutridrench. Any advice is helpful to this newbie. Thank you so much in advance.

I would probably just dip her beak every now and then but not really force water, maybe just let her rest from all the stress and see how she does.

I would bring her out often and dip her beak as well. Poultry NutriDrench or Poultry Cell is a great supplement for shipped chicks. Give 1-2 drops orally to each chick daily for several days. Chicks who have pasty butt, may get it on a daily basis for the first week.

I see you have PND already. ACV is not really necessary for chickens, and I would not use it with baby chicks. It is one of the over-hyped products that many recommend. Clean water, clean food, and dry bedding with plenty of room in the brooder are the best things.

Thank you both for your advice and suggestions. Sadly, we lost this poor girl yesterday afternoon. She just wasn’t interested in eating or drinking. She was the only one not cheeping and frantic when I pulled them out of the box on Friday. I could tell then that she was in a bad way, but was hopeful I could help. Now I just hope she was as warm and comfortable as she could be until the end. Thanks again.

So sorry for your loss. We never know if they were weak to start with, had some internal issue, or suffered during shipment. Sometimes they just have a bad hatch. I always like to get shipped chicks from the nearest hatchery, so they are only one day in shipping. Good luck with the rest of your chicks.
