we bought 4 laying hen chicks a 2 wks. ago. We had them leaving in a small dog kennel until the coop was finished. The dog kennel was covered in chicken fencing so we could keep predators away during the day time but they could enjoy the sun. Well last night my mom forgot to bring the cage in and this morning we found them dead. Their heads where missing. But no damage to the fencing or the kennel! I'm stumped on how or what did this. Any ideas or suggestions on how i can prevent this

I believe I've read that racoons often do that. So sorry for your loss.

Yep, raccoons would be my guess as well. They can reach right through chicken wire, grab the chick, and pull its head out for a snack. Weasel is another possibility, but raccoons tend to be more common.

yep coon is my guess, as others said they can reach through. Chicken wire is not good at keeping animals out and should not be used. Instead use 1/2 inch hardware cloth this cant be chewed or reached through by anything. So sorry for your loss. You also should set a trap and dispose of the coon, or coons as they will be back and best to get rid of them now.

Very sorry for your loss, coons will kill every single one if given the opportunity and they will do so even after they are full just for sport.
