So I culled the last of my young roosters six weeks ago and today I found a hen sitting on some eggs in the bushes. I removed some from her and not at all expecting anything to be in the eggs, I smashed one on the ground for the dog as I do sometimes for a treat. To my horror there was a chick inside which was quickly eaten omg I felt sick.
How long can a hen lay fertile eggs after the rooster has gone? I was not prepared to have a broody hen with more babies cause I am moving in two weeks and I’m packing them all up. I thought I was not having anymore chicks!
I’ve left her sitting on four, the other five were duds.
