Chicks Old Enough to Go Outside?

question: i have 1 hen from my previous flock and am ready to introduce my 4 new chicks outside. im planning on using the see but not touch method but dont know what to do about separate housing at night. any suggestions?

Is there any way you can just separate your coop? That is what I did for my brooder. My coop is 4x8 and I just took some plastic fencing, like snow or leaf fencing or something, though one is a bit heavier plastic, and I separated off a little 2x4 section in the back by the people door. It was really easy to do, stapled up the plastic fencing in just a few minutes. Maybe you could do something like that if your coop is big enough.

i have a way to separate them during the day but im not sure how to create separate "housing" for the new chicks at night? was thinking i could just turn the trough that they are currently in on it's side?

That could work! But there is no way to just somehow divide the current coop? It doesn’t need to be a totally separate building just as long as they can’t actually touch each other.

If you turn it on the side, they will recognize it and be homing on that. They should go into the coop with no problem, you might have to put them in there one or two nights. As for one bird on 4 new ones, I would not worry too much about it unless you are very cramped for space.
