Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Raising dogs around chickens is always a risky proposition as dogs and chickens don't generally mix well. We've gotten many posts from new members who are horrified and saddened because there dog (sometimes even small ones like chihuahuas) suddenly and unexpectedly decided to chase and kill their chickens. And once a dog has done this, it's next to impossible to break him from doing it again. If you are going to train your puppy, I would personally start with chicks. That way is something goes wrong and you lose some, you will have lost less capital investment than would be the case with adult chickens. There is a good article on how to train your dog to get along with your chickens at http://pets.thenest.com/dog-along-chicken-12532.html. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your dgo.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Be VERY VERY careful with dogs around chickens. There are SO many threads in our emergency section on how my dog ate my chicks or chickens. So I beg you to be careful introducing your dog to chickens or chicks.

Introducing dogs to chickens is always fraught with danger. In the case of HUGE breeds especially rambunctious puppies - the level skyrockets. Even the most docile large breed pup can't accidentally maim or kill a chick or chicken by brushing them aside or poking with a paw etc. Answering new members many have horror stories of their pup, dog /cat destroying their flock. Dogs regard chickens as fun, squeaky toys. As soon as the chick stops squeaking (dead) they run and grab another one. You never hear of a chicken killing a dog, not even the tiny breeds. I was very surprised to hear Chihuahuas and doxies are among the most ardent chicken slayers.
