Hi, our chicks are almost 6 weeks old and outside now. We are still feeding them the starter food. Since they are outside, picking from the ground should I add grit to their diet? Also if so should it be mixed in their food or in a separate feeder? So much to learn, I am so thankful for this site and it's members.

Thank you, also thanks for such a quick response. I will be going out soon & will be able to get it for them today. It is so hard to get anything else done when I want to check on them constantly. Thank goodness all I have to do is look out the back door. lol

If they are pecking at the ground, what they are doing is finding their own grit. Why do you think they are pecking at the ground? If it will make you feel any better, buy some grit and toss it on the ground for them to find. It's not that expensive and it will do no harm whatsoever, but they really don't need it if they are pecking at the ground.

That did cross my mind, but I had read in different places they may still need grit. I have it now so I will go ahead and put it out for them. Thanks

Hi Glo and welcome! I also have 6 week old chicks (Red Star) mine have been outside for the past week, I just scatter some grit around in their run, I found putting it in a separate dish they just kick it all out onto the ground anyways lol. Good luck with your girls, and I totally get where your coming from…… I am constantly running out to their pen to check on them :)
