I have four turken chicks and two bantams...not sure there exact age but the turkens seem about a week... maybe the bantams are a bit younger.

anyhow one bantam and one turken have been panting a bit. they have access to clean water, a cooler spot out of the brooder light, feed, grit, i also mixed a very small amount of diatomaceous earth in with there feed and in there bedding because i took them off of medicated starter. any suggestions?

thanks!

thank you guys,

i moved the heat lamp back last night and no more panting that i have seen. I also cleaned the bantes' (roger) butt off with olive oil as it seemed like it was having a hard time getting poop to not cling. they all seem pretty spry now.

and yes the DE is food grade.

i forgot to mention that i also have a bit of organic raw apple cider vinegar in their water... i read that that was supposed to prevent pasting...

It's counterintuitive, but it seems like the small ones get overheated the fastest. I had my littlest one die, and its main symptom was panting. But I think it was overheated partly because it wasn't drinking, so there was more to the story, but it did overheat first.
