I didn't have any Vaseline the last time I needed it for this so ended up using some of the Bag Balm I use for my hands. Anything of about the right consistency will work for this. The birds hate getting that gooey, sticky stuff on their beaks so they usually stop once you've applied it. If the wound is raw I usually rub a bit of antibiotic goo on it first before applying the Vaseline/Bag Balm/Whatever.
For mature birds I've gone over to using pine tar (in the horse section at the feed store). It has antiseptic properties and the birds positively hate getting it in their mouths (I imagine it tastes nasty). Pecking stops as soon as I put it on them.
