Chicks play in the run for the first time *PICS*

Those are great pics, what do you have down for the run flooring?

I asked my son to help name some of our chicks, he said no.

I asked again, no again.

I said please and explained that they needed names.

He thought about it for awhile (he is 3) and then pronounced their name.

"Chicken Benson"

I asked for more names and he decided one name was enough for all of them.

So now our family consists of Mommy Benson, Daddy Benson, Elliott Benson and Chicken Benson (a collective).

My 14 year old daughter is fascinated with Japanese culture so our 3 girls all received Japanese names. Hana (pronounced like sauna but with an "h"), Yuki (pronounced you-key), and Miku (pronounced me-koo).

I named one of my quail Keiko (pronounced KAY-KO). I mean, she IS a Japanese quail after all.

The other ones are named Lucy Liu (I know..she isn't Japanese, but the name fits), Cricket (a white who loves to make cricket noises) and Romeo my little roo. If I get more I will have to have my anime fan son help me name them

Judging from the pictures, your coop and run both look pretty new. I would guess from your chicks young age, that they have not had sufficient time to become accustomed and attached to their coop and roost, before being introduced to the outside run. They should naturally re-enter the coop at sundown to go to roost as they become older and more accustomed to their roost. However, I have on occassion, experienced some problems getting even young pullets, to re-enter the hen house to roost. Patience and perserverance usually pays off and they will eventually get the idea that the inside roost is "the place to be" when nightime comes.

Thanks! We had to build this area up since it was so un-level. We ended up putting down some fill soil, then a 3-4 inch layer of stone and topped it off with 6-8 inches of playground sand. I heard this was a great way to prevent muddy feet when it rains AND you never have to buy grit for them since the sand will do the job. So far I'm loving this set-up.

"Chicken Benson" is a cute name!!! My son, Jake, decided all the BOs are named "Coco" and all the CMs and BRs (since they look exactly the same to him) are named Wilson. I named one of our other EEs that has started to feather out on her neck into a beautiful red color... she's now named Scarlet (not too original, but she fits the name) It would be too hard for me to name each one at this point since many of them look exactly the same. I'm guessing as they grow and I'm able to spend more time with them, I'll notice small differences and name them based on personality.

Yes... the coop was just completed before we put the chicks in. The chicks moved out there when they were 4 weeks old (with a heat lamp) and we put them outside in their run for the first time when they were 5 weeks 2 days old. So they were in there for 9 days before going out in the run. I will say this though... today was still a beautiful day but a bit breezy. I went down to the coop to check on everyone and NO ONE was outside in the run. They all found a sun spot on the floor of the coop and snuggled up for a nap inside. It was so cute (after I realized no one was missing or escaped)

That is our problem too

ours go in when it gets dark out, or they r laying right outside the coop

we have two, 3 foot sticks, we use them as arm extensions. All I have to do is grab one in each arm and walk behind them and they run right in. I have one who has recently got a little cocky, haha, and she will sometimes try and jump one. For the most part, it works like a charm. Enjoy your very nice set up!

Oh and I am ready to live on a Farm too!

I would be one happy lady to have to wake up every morning to a cow and goat who needed milking, chickens who need eggs gathered for breakfast and a horse who wants to be groomed and go for a ride. The added bonus of having a HUGE yard for the boys and pups to run around in would just put me over the edge!!!! Maybe someday
