Chicks recognize mother

Do chicks know who their mother is by her appearence or by her voice and sound? Some of my hens stop making sounds to the chicks at some stage but the chicks still follow them and recognize them from a distance...
And what happens if the mother is all black and there are other black hens in the flock? Do they recognize their mother by her "face" ??

Yes they recognise the bird they were raised by. Birds are much better at recognising eachother than we'd expect, they can tell who their mother is regardless of how similar her flockmates are
