Chicks refusing to use brooder plate

I too had a brooder plate that was hot to the touch, and ordered a temperature regulator for it.
And I think that 125F is too hot on the surface, that's a lot warmer than a broody hen's body temperature! I set a lower surface temp. and it does better. Also it's sloped so part is higher than the other area.

shouldn't we be able to raise the plate itself to lessen the heat to the chicks? just put one end low and one end high , and the chicks can stand wherever they feel comfortable.... no?

Yes, you will want one side higher than the other anyway. I found the 125F too hot to touch for long, and that's why the temperature regulator, sold right next to the brooder plates. Says something right there!

No, I didn't return it. I just ordered a temperature regulator and plugged it into that, so it's holding beautifully between 123-127-deg-F. I like seeing the temp, so I know the plate is working properly.
