I recommend contacting your local post office to let them know when they are expected to arrive. Give them your phone number and request that they call you as soon as they arrive. Then pick them up as soon as you get the call. The faster you can get them home and into the brooder then better. Preheat your brooder. Turn on the heat lamps a few hours before they are expected to arrive. It can take awhile for everything in the brooder to warm up. When you are driving home from the post office take off your coat and crank up the heat to get them warm.
I have not ordered directly from hatcheries. There are lots of local feed stores that get their chicks from hatcheries. I let them deal with the shipping headaches.
