This is a bit of a story I’m going to try to keep it short. Basically someone who I bought a hen from before was selling chicks. I bought 10 chicks from them. I have another 10 I got from tractor supply.
The ones I bought from a fellow local farmer got sick. I thought it was to cold and it was my fault. I checked the coop top to bottom and noticed a drop of blood. I examined all the chicks and wrote it off as they trampled the one that got to cold. Suddenly in a few hours 4 more chicks gone! One was barely alive I took her inside it wasn’t cold out. But again I thought perhaps she was.. I warmed her and she started pooping blood and didn’t want to eat or drink. She died hour later. Coccidiosis is my guess now. I’m panicked because foolish me let all the chicks play outside together for awhile a few days before. Now my other chicks are sick…. I took some to the vet to get an antibiotic but this doctor was terrible. He handled my chick poorly and said “don’t waste your money on saving chicks” I told him I needed an antibiotic he gave me doxycycline.. my chick I took died moments after he handed them back..

Later in the night I told the woman I bought the chicks from the story. I told her I simply wanted to warn her encase her other chicks are sick. (I only had them 3-4 days) She said I didn’t clean the coop because they got Coccidiosis… I clean my coops every other day. I don’t deny they could have still gotten into something. I clean chick coops every day. Either way she gave me some advice saying how I shouldn’t have my chicks outside… because she keeps them inside till they are about to lay.. I feel kinda talked down to. I owned chickens for over a year and I can care for them. But between the vet and her I feel so annoyed. So here I am reaching out to the community. Sorry for the rant I just needed to explain the situation.

Here are my questions.

1: I got doxycycline from the vet will that help the chicks?

2: I clean my small coops with vinegar, baking soda, hot water and dawn dish soap. I bought ammonia is that better?

3: Should I treat my entire flock?

4: I bought corid, and diatomaceous earth any advice for someone using them the first time?

Thanks for your time! I just want the best for my chicky babies. My poor duckwing Phoenix pullet who is 4 months was also with the babies outside. I am worried for her too.

I would start treating with the Corid asap.

Liquid Corid dose is 2tsp or Powdered Corid is 1 1/2 tsp per gallon of water given for 5-7 days as the only source of drinking water.

For the sickest ones, I would also give them a direct drench for 3 days, this is in addition to them drinking the mixed water. Instruction for drench in this link. https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/corid-amprolium-oral-drench-instructions.74391/
DO, syringe the mixed water into the chicks too if they are not drinking.

Coccidiosis is found in poop and soil.
Chicks that have been brooder raised can have it, chicks that are outside can have it. You didn't do anything wrong.

Treat all the youngsters, it won't hurt to treat the older chickens as well.

Thank you so much. I lost more chicks but I am treating the others with the entire flock just encase. I got some medicated feed and vitamins too for young ones. I did notice all my chickens who are older seem fine. But like you said won’t hurt to treat them all.

I have new chicks born so I cleaned my brooder room top to bottom and have them on medicated feed.

Thank you again so much! My anxiety has been through the roof.

In the US most medicated chick starters contain a very small amount of Amprolium/Amprol which is Corid. It won't hurt to feed the medicated feed if you wish.

Do not give extra vitamins that contain B1(Thiamine) during the course of treatment with Corid. There could be a contraindication. The Corid should be the only thing you are giving them besides their feed.

Hello! How are all the chicks? I am so sorry to hear you have to go through all this. 😢 I feel so sad for you. I can Not imagine if my chicks got sick. I also am so sorry that you feel talked down too and was treated so terribly! I can tell just by your post that you are a wonderful chicken owner, giving the chickens all the love and care that they could ever ask for. I can also tell that you a very tender and caring person. The world is going to make you feel like that is a bad thing, like the vets remark “don’t wast your money on saving chicks.”. Saving any life is NOT a waste! And the fact that he would think that means he is not a good vet. And being tender and loving in my opinion is the best characteristic you could have. Don’t let people like that get to you! You are a wonderful person, and a wonderful chicken owner! And don’t let ANYONE tell you otherwise! You are loved and cherished by Jesus Christ. I am praying for you! 💖

Thank you so much! Unfortunately all my chicks except one passed. However I have been medicating all the flock and the newer chicks to prevent it from happening again. I do love all my chicks deeply and all of them deserve a fighting chance. The antibiotic the vet gave me did nothing. I’m glad I listened to the forums here and saved this last baby.
These are my newest chicks but they are a bit older lol I haven’t taken any newer pictures but they are alive and well. And I did have a few ameraucana chicks who were sick that got better.

Thanks so much for the kind words! ❤️
