I picked up 5 Cochins to start my flock, 3 weeks old, I have no other birds yet. One sneezed the first day, then 3 the next day. One isn't doing well, I'm thinking ILT because of the gasping throat thing he is doing. He eats, drinks, plays but sneezing is more violent now, head shaking, and the gasping. Since I'm starting my flock and I have more chicks coming by mail... I know I separate them, clean the crap out of everything, even me, between handling, ect. But should I cull them since most viruses shed for life, if it is ILT? I want them mostly for family farm and eggs. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks and

My Cochin I just purchased yesterday is doing this! What happened to yours??

The one died, another started wheezing, the rest sneezing and continued to declined. I culled them unfortunately. I won't buy off Craigslist again. Only buy from NPIP breeders.

Chickens do not get the common cold. They can get respiratory diseases from viruses, mold fingus, or bacteria, such as infectious bronchitis, MG, ILT, coryza, and aspergillosis.

Make sure the sneezing is not environmental or due to dust in feed or bedding. They shed a lot of feather dander as well.

When you buy chicks from someone else, they may have been exposed to carriers or older chickens at the breeders. MG or mycoplasma gallisepticum is one respiratory disease that also can be transmitted in the hatching egg. All respiratory diseases make the survivors carriers, most for life, and IB survivors are carriers up to a year.

Be aware that NPIP chickens may also have been exposed to diseases. Here is a good link to read about symptoms:

I think ILT. One chick had a distinctive gulping. It was definitely virus, not environmental. I am just starting my chicken family and didn't want birds that were always sick or could make new birds sick. It's a sad thing, but part of farm life. Educating myself better now.

I just got mine yesterday bc it was the same age as my chicks! I’m panicking! I usually only hatch my own!!!! I only got 2. I’m cleaning the brooder and hoping it’s the stress of moving. Only 1/2 is doing it. Sneezing, breathing heavy and making a pooping noisy when it breaths. Aspergillosis is what I’m wondering? My older chicks had spilled their water?? What’s ILT?
