Ok, we spent an inordinate amount of time reading about and getting a coop in order. With a young child at home we're looking to get two hens, primarily as pets but also as layers (at least for a while).

We could get started chicks 4-5 weeks old, newly hatched or young hens (point of lay). Given that all will be given endless attention, what might the best option be for upping our chances of getting two very-friendly girls?

Thanks!

PS Thanks for all those who replied to our introduction and for the suggestions on breeds and bantams vs standards.

Chicks, as young as you can get them.
You'll be able to control (and know for certain) how they are raised and also be able to get them used to being handled from an early age.
Also, I would suggest at least three. If you only have two and something were to happen to one of them, you don't want to be left with a single lonely chick.

I would get chicks, however you won't know the sex until they are older. So if you get three, one or more could turn out to be a rooster. Chicks are sooo much fun, and the 4-5 week olds might be flighty if they have not been handled!
