Well, my chicks are about 4 weeks old and I am very new to this chicken raising game and I noticed last night that I have a couple that are larger that appear to be trying to caw or crow or what ever you call it. Is this a sign of a rooster or is it a sign of something???

Some folks on the forum have sworn that their cockerels have tried to "crow" at a young age. The few that I have had, have not though. Good thing, as I have to give them away, no roosters here.

I see, Ill have to try and see, Ill keep an eye oin them and see for sure but Ill have to see. Not sure what they birds are because they were strait run grab bag style.

The one 4 week old Wyandotte I have that I am 99% sure is a roo was doing that a few days ago. He was definitely not yawning.....it look identical to a corw but no noise was coming out.

ours are 4 weeks old today, and I have 3 bo roos that are crowing... not a full grown crow, but they are doing it... sounds like a rusty hinge combined with worn out brake grinding...

LOL....all 3 sets of mine have started trying to crow at around 4 weeks. The first set in January 2 of 3 OEGB were cockerels, and I didn't know what they were trying to do at first. I like your description of a worn out brake grinding

The second set in March 5 out of 10 were cockerels, with only 2 trying to crow, both D'Uccles. The sebright cockerel was just beginning to crow at 8 weeks(Just rehomed 3 of those, never again will I buy "assorted bantams"...sigh)
The 3rd set are 2 silkies and a sultan. They are just around 3 weeks now. The sultan I am 80% possitive is a cockeral. He does the neck stretch and squeeks a little. His legs are thicker than the other two also. The legs, so far, has been a good indication for me, other than the pathetic little crow.
