I have a chick who has a scabby bum could have been caused by me cleaning her poopy butt, but I was as gentle as possible. But her vent was all swollen and it has started to heal.. but when a scab forms it closes her little vent shut! I have been cleaning it with water and then coconut oil and slowly opening the vent again. It’s very grim :( poor thing must be in a lot of pain.

Today I peeled most of the scab off very carefully with the help of coconut oil and put some iodine on too. I put a little bit of oil in her vent too and she did 2 big poos.

Any ideas on how to keep the vent open as it heals? I don’t want to keep breaking the scab because it hurts her and it will never heal that way.

She has a lot of problems. She’s 10 days old and she is only 30g and has not put on any weight since I got her. Doesn’t eat much.

Here’s a photo of the scab closed yesterday

Poor baby! Continue with the coconut oil a couple times a day. I have also used A&D Ointment because that’s what I had on hand, great for chapped little bottoms.
