hello everyone, from upstate new york, new to chicken raising, we received our 21 chicks from McMurry Haterchy last sunday, they all arrived healthy and looking good. However, my question is, is it normal for 1 week old chicks to have juicy poop, like diaherea? we have been adding some grit to thier food and thought maybe it was a bit too much, any advise would be appreciated, Thanks and I just want to say I love this website, it's so helpful.

I am not sure with the grit and the runs but if they are being fed chick starter and nothing else they don't need grit. The grit is already in the starter grower. I would stop the grit and see. My chicks are 13 weeks and the poop thing changes from runny to solid from day to day. John

There are two different types of poop. One with the white urine cap that is fairly innocuous...then there's the cecum or caecum poop that smells to high heaven and is like glue....it is runny and brown...with chicks it looks like chocolate chips.....
