Chiggers

A dead chicken on Monday, a dead snake on Thursday and now chiggers . . . and I haven't gotten a single egg yet. I cleaned all the pine chips out of the coop to replace it with sand. Put a little Seven Dust around the roost area. I have noticed some scratching. I checked for any rat, mouse or snake entrance . . . . I am covered with chiggers. I came inside and showered immediately after I was finished but the coop and run and yard and chickens need to be treated. Chiggers are not uncommon in my area of Central Texas. It always comes as a surprise to me. Everything is good until it is not . . . this week has been one trauma after the other. I have a spray can of Pyrethin but it is a little different than permethrin. I also have Demon to spray on the yard and Seven Dust for the chickens. Any opinions?

We have chiggers around here too, but my 6 mo. old (she's in a therapy chair) was attacked by red mites, Dermanyssus gallinae, last month. Don't know if it works on chiggers, but Prozap Garden & Poultry Dust did a hell of a job eradicating those b*stards within several hours. And they're tuff to get rid of! I use sulfur as a preventative, I used it on myself when I was a young man picking wild berries and such. I use the dust as they will eat the granules/pellets. It does not kill but they dont like it,,,and make like a tree and leave.

To control chiggers I mow the grass very low everything dries out all the way to the ground. Chicken pens in contact with ground are moved to sunny locations when feasible. Some chickens have to put up with chigger bites and appear OK with it. For me I spray down with insect repellent and scratch a lot. Kids are instructed to follow certain paths and we bath more than needed to stay clean.

They’re little mite bastards that live in vegetation and get onto you kind of like ticks would. They’re tiny but have a painful bite, like a needle stab, and it’s a common belief that they burrow into your skin. They don’t, but they do cause the bite area to harden and itch like crazy.

Wait a tick (no pun intended) chiggers are bad for chickens? Ok has chiggers everywhere. Impossible to get rid of them almost.

Dust the yard with sulfur, yes it will smell for a few days, but that goes away as do the chiggers,,,
