Children and Chickens DO MIX!

I completely understand what you're saying. I don't have kids yet but I will one day and they will be surrounded by animals from the moment they are born. I love and respect all living things from plants to animals to my fellow humans. I understand that children must be raised with animals to understand (forgive the Lion King phrase) the cirle of life.

I was raised around animals but for some reason my parents gave animals away once they got older. Until I was 19 I had never had an animal that died!!! We had one cat get killed by a car when I was about 7 but I don't really remember him to much. It sucks to be an adult, yes an adult I rented my own apartment at 18, and have a pet die and that be the first pet death you've ever known.

It is very important to have your kids around animals. Life and death is reality. It's the way the world works and sheltering them from that will not help anything.

I agree that kids and chickens (all animals) are wonderful together. Mayberrysaint... I hear ya about the roos. My kids have learned to run the other way and back into the house if Parrot (bb OEGB) is out and about. He sees them and makes a point to try to get them. Once he is under control the kids are free to enjoy the birds. It's all about knowing your animals and your kids.

I am VERY new to this site. I just registered today but I just felt I had to say something as I was reading this post. I have three boys ages 15, 10 and 7, and we have had chickens since April 30th. We received 10 meat chickens and 8 laying hens as well as one fancy rooster we kept. The boys interacted with ALL the chickens from day one. They helped raise them all. They really enjoy being with them and the hens and 1 roo really are like pets!! The point I am trying to make is if you have animals on your property trying to keep your children away would be difficult and unfair. It is a great learning experience for children! Almost any opportunity can be turned into something positive if approached in the right way!
