Chilled chick question

Two are week old and one is 2 weeks old is my guess by the size. When I went down this morning they were huddled up under the light fighting to be in the center. I came back down after getting something to adjust the light when I moved them they kept falling over and seemed like they were having trouble staying awake. I don't mean there heads falling over like they are sleepy because, they are young I mean falling over on their sides like they are dying. After adjusting the light and going back down a couple hours later and making them move around and drink water they were actually walking around and drinking and eating.

They have a real heat lamp. It is windy today. The sides of the brooder is solid but the doors on top have a chicken wire window so they could be getting a draft. I will close that up. I am not sure about poop color or consistency. I am fairly sure the problem was the cold since they perked up when the light was adjusted. I hope I have answered everyones questions, it is hard to remember all the question.

Oh yea, unfortunately I can't bring them in the house because, if I do my husband will be having me sleep in the brooder.

It sounds like you are guessing on the temp.
They need to be at 90-95 degrees by their age, You really need to get a thermometer in there, and maybe try to cut down the drafts.
Is there a garage, or shed you could put the brooder box in, to regulate the temp.?

I can't move the brooder box it is actually built into the coop. I will check into getting a thermometer. I have sealed up anyplace they could be getting a draft from with card board. When I went down tonight they were still up and moving about. So is it possible for chicks to get to the point that my birds were at and still pull through if you correct the situation. I haven't had chickens for long and I have only had one other chick that had got a chill before. I was just wondering if they get a chill does that mean they are certain to die??? Sorry I know that is probably a stupid question but I really want to know.

Have any of you had a bird get to this point and still pull through.

Sounds like they may be sick if the temperature is stable? Perhaps adding electrolyte solution to their water may perk them up? If not, then they most likely are sick and may have to resort to antibiotics. Drafty environment is a birds worst enemy.

I had a chick hatch late and their mumma decided it was time to move them while the late chick was still wet and too wobbly. He followed her out but didn't follow her back in for some reason, I found him cold in the nest box along from where she was with the other chicks. I thought he was dead, he was limp and had the deflated flat look small dead things get, then I noticed his eye twitch.

I sat with him for 3hrs with him on/next to a heat pack snuggled on my chest. He perked up, I put him back out with his mum. Now he's two weeks old, very healthy and feathered out faster than the rest.

If after they've been warmed up they still aren't acting right, they're probably sick with something

Oh thank you for this story it gives me hope. I haven't checked on them just yet this morning, I think I am a little nervous. Thanks again for this story hopefully my story will have a good ending also.

I will update and let everyone know how the babies are after I go down to the coop. I am trying to wait a little longer before I open the brooder since it is so cold outside. Hopefully keeping it shut will keep the warmth in.
