Chilli, one of my chicken has died with no apperant reason.

Hi..I have 6 backyard chickens. Had anyway.

All speckle sussex. I live in Birmingham, AL. Temperature goes up to 100 F during the day. Nights are little better. As soon as coop door open automatically, they free range in the back yard.

22nd July, one of my chicken has died at night in the coop, with no prior evidence of stress/sickness/wound or anything. Coop door was closed. I have one fan in the ceiling, works all night to take moisture out. And window was cracked open. And I added another low blowing fan to direct to the roost.

Now, 2 nights ago, again 11 pm. Another one, Bella, has died. Again with no apparent reason.

I am confused and upset.

Any experience, suggestions?

I'm sorry for your loss.

There is really no way to determine the cause of death without a necropsy.

Since you mention the heat, with such hot temperatures, you may want to open all windows if there is a way to do it.
I don't know how your coop is set up, but the more ventilation the better.

Thank you. I have big fan is in the ceiling, running all the time takes the all moisture out from the open second tier ceiling. I have window at the coop and added little fan blowing inside, not directly on them at the roost. See the building at the right. That is the coop and top has second tier , open. Fan takes out the air and moisture from there. Even the coop we made isolated walls, window and openings, I thought has good air circulation.

What surprises me that both happened at night. I put eyes in the coop in a shallow pan when it is too hot too. But they are still panting I can see , wings are open, mouth is open.

I guess , if it happens again I will bring to necropsy.

You have a beautiful layout, but if they are still panting you need more ventilation. Most likely they are suffering from heat stroke.
Cover your windows with hardware cloth so predators can't get in and open them up. Even in winter a tightly closed coop chickens can die from poor ventilation.
Fans are always a plus in summer but the air needs to move through out the whole coop.

If you do have anymore die, then a necropsy would be in order, but in my opinion, more ventilation is needed, especially if you are keeping the windows closed.
