Chinese quail keeps flapping his wings at night

I've had many quails before but this if the first time I got some American bred ones, so this male I have will start vibrating his wings loudly when it gets dark and I've never seen that behaviour before. He doesn't jump or anything and as soon as lights are on he stops. He doesn't crow much though, it's like he chooses this over crowing.

He might have always had a night light. It sounds silly, but some have been known to be afraid of the dark. Can you put him on a dimmer so the light slowly fades rather than abruptly turning off?
