Yes, they really do need babysitting that much. I got one before I knew better, and I did manage to hatch chicks in it once, but it really sucks as far as incubators go. You can't trust the thermostat and even with it bang full of water, was still not keeping the humidity where it needed to be. Plus, you really need to keep the styrofoam packing on it while you use it because plastic lets the heat out too easily. There have been many reports of them catching fire, too. For the price, I would always recommend a HovaBator 1602n with the fan and upright turner over a plastic incubator.
