Chipped Paint Eaters

My 3 hens peck and peck at our house as well as the white picket fence until they loosen the paint and then they eat the chips. I have painted and painted, but they still keep finding loose paint and eat the chips, they are constantly pecking at paint. Are the paint chips harmful to them and is anyone else having this problem?

I wouldn't worry about the paint unless it was so old it was lead based.
