1# Finding Chip
It was a bitter cold day in the dreary month of November. Ten-year-old Sarah Jane Lars was on her way home from school, riding in the big yellow bus. The driver dropped her off at 98th street, one mile away from 99th street, where Sarah lived. Sarah always requested this, even in cold weather, because she enjoyed activities, and because she was determined to stay fit. Aside from that, she enjoyed the mile-long walk/jog. So she wrapped her scarf tighter around her face, and started jogging, hardly thirty seconds after getting off the bus.
As usual, she jogged the first few yards, and then slowed to walk the last few. But, as she slowed to a walk, she heard a sad, puppy-like whimper. Sarah stopped and looked around. She saw an abandoned apple crate on the sidewalk. The whimper sounded again, and Sarah traced it to the apple crate. She walked over to the crate and pushed it aside, hence revealing a tiny puppy. Sarah stared at the poor little animal, as is struggled to free itself. Why doesn’t it just run away? Sarah thought in her head. Then, she noticed why. The puppy’s right back leg was firmly encased in frozen mud! Sarah felt her tears run down her cheeks, and she knew that she couldn't’t help but cry. She knelt beside the puppy, and quietly reassured him.
It was obvious that the pup had been abused. As Sarah lifted a hand to pet the poor pup, in hopes of calming him, he flinched and pressed himself against the cold, frozen ground. “It’s okay, boy. I’m not going to hurt you.” Sarah soothed, quietly, as she gently fondled the puppy’s soft, silky fur. As Sarah stroked the puppy, she assessed the situation. She noticed a medium-sized stone that she could try to use to break the frozen mud around the puppy’s leg.
She raised the stone and gently bashed it against the ice on the puppy's leg. Finally, the ice broke and she pried it apart, freeing the puppy from its icy leg-cuff. She scooped him up, surprised at how light he was, considering how big he was. The puppy had long black and tan fur, cute folded over button ears, and big, almond shaped chocolate brown eyes. He looked up at her and gave the slightest wag of his tail. Sarah smiled and hugged him against her chest, then she began the walk back home.
As she walked, she felt the puppy relax in her arms. She smiled as he laid down and began drifting off to sleep. How good this must feel, after being trapped in ice for so long, Sarah thought. Finally, she saw her house up ahead. Her house was a small, cozy stone cottage, with a white picket fence along the back, and lots and lots of foliage in the front yard.
Sarah opened the front door and sniffed the air as a delicious smell met her nose. “Mom, are you making... Roast beef and potatoes?” she asked, grinning. This was Sarah's favorite meal. Her mother rarely cooked it, because it took two days to make. But her mom must have started it early, because it was already half-cooked.
Susan, Sarah's mom, nodded and grinned. Then she saw what Sarah had in her arms, and her grin faded. “Sarah, what do you have in your arms?” she asked, disapprovingly. “It's a puppy I found stuck in frozen mud. He was gonna die. I figured I could at least bring him home and take him to a shelter.” Susan nodded and said, “Well, if there's one thing that'll warm him up, it'll be a bowl of my homemade Stew!”
Sarah was rather taken aback. Few animals got a bowl of her warm stew, as long as it was edible to people. Sarah's mother took great pride in her stew, and it was a delicacy when finished. Sarah's mother never gave her homemade stew to any animal. Not even her wonderful pet cat, Arabella.
But Sarah couldn't just deny her own sight. She watched as her mother placed a bowl of steaming stew on the floor. Sarah put the puppy on the floor, and he rushed to the bowl. Sarah watched him. She was amazed with the puppy's behavior. Instead of diving into the bowl of delicious food, he circled it, whimpering and looking at the bowl of stew, then at Sarah and her mother.
“It's okay, boy. You can have it.” Sarah said, trying to remember the word her friend Kim always used when giving dog a meal. “Get it... no... um, have it..., no, it was, um..., OH! Now I remember!” She walked up to the puppy and said the special command: “Take it,”. In an instant, the puppy lunged at the bowl of food, scarfing it down with loud chomping sounds.
“Sarah, he has to get a bath. If he is gonna stay here, he must get a bath!” Sarah's eyes opened wide. “You mean I can... keep him?” Sarah's mother smiled and said, “Yes, you can keep him. And wont your father be surprised when he gets home!” Sarah's father had gone off to Scotland for three weeks on a business trip. He wouldn't get home for another two weeks and four days.
As soon as the puppy had finished his little meal, Sarah scooped him up and walked off towards the bathroom. “All that volunteering at Le' Pampered Paws will finally pay off!” she said, as she carried the puppy towards the bathroom. Sarah had volunteered for a while at a pet groomer's business, run by her mother's friend, Christine Parker. As a volunteer, Sarah learned how bathe and properly groom dogs. Now all that work was fixing to pay off.
Sarah turned on the warm water and put the stopper on the drain. She squirted a dollop of cat shampoo (the only shampoo for animals currently available) into the warm churning water.
The puppy wiggled and squirmed desperately, trying not to get put in the soapy water. But he failed, and Sarah plunked him into the warm sudsy water. Once into the water, the puppy froze, still as a statue. He didn't move his firmly locked legs only slightly quivered, and he turned his head, but he didn't move.
Sarah soaked his coat of soft amber fur, then she squeezed another dollop of Lavender scented shampoo onto his thick coat of fur and rubbed it in. Then, she poured a cup of water over his fur, rinsing the shampoo away.
She lifted the soggy puppy out of the tub and wrapped him in a towel. She vigorously rubbed his coat until he was mostly dry. The puppy acted very friendly after the trauma of bath time was passed. He started frolicking around the house. Though Sarah's mother wasn't about to let him on the furniture, he was welcome to run everywhere in the house.
Once the puppy stopped running all over the place and was taking a drink from the bowl Susan had put down, Sarah's mother mentioned her observation of him. “The way his colors look, golden brown with chocolate brown spots, he reminds me of a chocolate-chip cookie... that's interesting.” “Well, mom, I guess you just named the puppy.” Sarah said. “Oh, I did? What did I name him?” Susan said. “Chip: it's the perfect name!” Sarah said. “Oh, okay, if you say so...” Susan said. Sarah grinned and scooped up Chip. “My baby, Chip.” she said, fondling the fur behind his ears.
Sarah carried him down the hallway, and into her room. She placed the puppy on her bed and sat down at her desk. Sarah's room was always full of her interesting experiments. Sarah liked doing experiments. She had lots of different studies going on in her room. She currently had a little feeder mouse clan under supervision. She was fascinated by the way the little rodents grew, and lived in huge family clans.
Some of Sarah's more thrilling experiments involved her trusty camera, a small SAMSUNG digital camera. Sarah was very daring with what she did with that camera. Sarah had once strapped the camera to bike to see what the view was like. Now Sarah was plotting a new spy mission with her camera.
She started imagining all the fun things she could do with her camera and Chip. Sarah charted the mouse clan's behavior for the night, and walked over to her bed. She sat down beside Chip, and fondled his soft puppy fur. She imagined how much happier he probably felt, after getting a warm home with a family who loved him. She knew that he was probably much happier in a warm house, rather than trapped on a frozen street behind an apple crate, and she was again thankful that she found him. She had saved his life. And with that final thought, she drifted off to sleep, with her arm around Chip's neck.

It was 8 am on a Saturday morning. Chip was not happy. Sarah was still asleep and he needed to go to the bathroom! He had tried whining his loudest, but that did not wake Sarah at all. He needed to try something else. Chip had never had means to bark before, and, being a puppy, his bark was not very well-developed, but he was gonna try. He took a breath, gaped his mouth, and released his breath in a small, squeaky, bark. Sarah sat bolt upright in bed. And she wasn't a pretty sight.
She had bed hair, sleepy eyes, and her pajamas were loose and baggy. But she got up out of bed anyway, to take Chip outside. She knew that he had to go potty. She walked quietly down the hallway, so that she didn't disturb her sleeping mother. She opened the back door and went out into the fenced back yard with Chip. After checking the perimeter for any holes or gaps in or under fencing that Chip could get out of, she finally decided that the yard was “escape-proof” and went back inside without Chip.
Five minutes later, Sarah heard frantic yelping coming from the backyard. She ran outside--- and saw Eddie the huge white peacock, strutting about in the yard. Eddie belonged to old Mr. Herman, an elderly man whom owned Eddie and Edwina, a breeding pair of White Peacocks. Eddie's tail was extended and all his feathers were opened wide. No wonder Chip was scared--- Sarah would be scared too, if she didn't know Eddie as a gentle giant of a creature.
Sarah walked down into the yard and shooed Eddie away. Then she scooped up the frightened little pup and walked inside. Poor Chip was shaking! Sarah put him down and said with a smile “We go shopping today, buddy!”. Chip yipped and looked up at Sarah, wagging his tail. “Yeah, we're going to Pet Paradise.”
Pet Paradise was local family owned pet store. They sold anything that was useful or necessary for pets. They also sold an abundance of small pets such as guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, mice, or rare and exotic pets. Sarah had been going there for years. Her first encounter with a dog was there, as her mother and father had told her. Her father was away in Scotland on a business trip for three weeks.
Wouldn't he be surprised when he came home to a new puppy. Sarah was walking down the hall to her room to get changed. Once she opened her bedroom door, she remembered to chart her mouse clan's behavior for the day. Sarah checked on them. “8:45 am: The mouse clan is eating breakfast. Some are drinking water. The banana remains untouched. Oh well. End of observation.”
After pulling on a red short-sleeve shirt and dark blue jeans, Sarah checked to see if her mom was up. Susan was up as well.
“So, Mom, when are we going to go to Pet Paradise?” she asked. “Well, we could go as soon as we eat breakfast.” Susan replied. “That would be awesome!” Sarah exclaimed, happily. And with that, she ran into the kitchen to pour a bowl of cereal. She ate her cereal quickly, and prepared Chip for his visit to Pet Paradise. She used her comb and brushed his fur out as best she could, while her mom was still finding her car keys.
When Sarah and Chip were ready to go, they got in the red mini van, buckled up, with Sarah holding Chip in her lap, and off they drove. Sarah had a list. She needed a bag of puppy chow, a collar, a leash, a dog tag, a dog bed, and an assortment of treats and toys. She was still debating whether or not to buy a kennel to keep Chip in while she was away on such things as errands or at school.
Arriving at the pet store, Chip acted bouncy and anxious. He had no idea how to act, so his behavior changed every few seconds. One minute, he would be fearless and unafraid of other people and dogs, and the next minute, he would be so afraid that he couldn't get back to Sarah's side fast enough.
Sarah just couldn't seem to figure out which collar to get for Chip. They were all very nice, with clean, neat stitching and fancy buckles, but Sarah just didn't think that they were the right color.
Finally, Sarah decided to just decide on one, no matter how imperfect it was. She was about to go with a plain brown leather collar, when she noticed something: A fine, red nylon collar with golden studs and a golden clasp hung on a peg on the shelf. This collar was perfect! Sarah picked it up off the shelf and put it around Chip's neck. It fit perfectly, but also gave him plenty of room to grow.
Sarah smiled and triumphantly led Chip out of the aisle. She showed her mother the collar, proudly saying "It's perfect for him!" and showing it off. Her mother agreed, then she said "Is there a leash to match it?". Sarah's smile somewhat faded as she realized that she hadn't seen a leash to match it.
Her mother saw her smile fade, and said "Don't worry, dear. We'll just go ask Christine if she has one in the back." Sarah smiled and nodded cheerfully. Her mother walked up to Christine, and asked if there were any matching leashes in the back.
Christine smiled and said, "I don't know, but I can certainly go look for you. What's the brand?" Sarah handed the leash to Christine and said "I don't know what brand it is, but you could look and see if any leashes match it."
Christine nodded and smiled. "I'll do just that. Do you want to come with me?" Sarah looked at her mom with excitement in her eyes, and was just about to ask when her mom said "Go ahead. I still want to look at the saltwater fish."
Sarah hugged her, then skipped to Christine's side, smiling happily. "Alright, let's go." Christine said. She unlocked a door that said Employees Only in big, bold letters. Smiling ear to ear, Sarah followed Christine in.
