Chive’s 2026 Project 365

Oh no..may I ask why you got rid of your ducks?

I was never really dead set on it. I kept going back and forth because I love all of them. But I am going to be converting a shed into a second chicken coop so I'll have the room to keep them. 😊
I wound up deciding that they needed to go to a home that might keep them safer. 😅 I actually wound up losing almost all of my females to a fox family as soon as they started laying, was able to hatch some eggs and get the numbers back up, then our puppies got out and killed even more. I wasn’t going to have as many which I really wanted so that they could keep each other warmer over the winter in their hut, and it was also a really big pain having to haul water to them. I was also a little bit tired of fencing them off and cooping them up and they would still get eaten. I loved them so much and I absolutely loved to see them free range even more. I just decided that it would probably be better to rehome the few females I had left and start over next year with a better set up.

That’s great! It’s always so nice when you have more room for them. It makes them so happy too.

One of the puppies for today’s picture!

They are actually doing pretty well, and we have been having a lot of teens and negative temperatures. I did have to have a light on them at night and finally decided to just move them in the basement which is a little bit warmer than outside.
Of course our cats got into the brooder that had all the colored birds (other than silver) and ate over half of them the night I took that picture. :barnie I had separated them out because I wanted to get more colored chicks rather than all silver again…

They are so much fun to raise! They do fly though. You should see when one hops out as I am putting the food or water in and I basically am racing the cats to find him first.
Oh no Im sorry for your losses, that's awful! Those darn cats!

Aw, that's too bad. Sorry for your losses. I get it - ducks can be a lot of work when you have to haul water and maintain their fence.
