I'm trying to find out what dose of chlorine dioxide solution to give my chicken. Would do so by (non needle) syringe by mouth. I've used it myself for years. I can't find the info on the Andreas Kalcker site. Wondering whether anyone here can help? Here is her story: Ex battery, then happily over a year in a back garden with another hen. Given to me last week because owner sick. Heavily moulting. I separated her from my ten after a day because being pecked badly, but also realised she has a respiratory issue. No mucous, no gurgling. Twitches her head often. Squarks in a throat way. Eats and drinks well, friendly. Poo is normal. Main thing is I don't want to pass anything on to the rest of them. Idon't know what is the cause, and unlikely to take her to a vet, so if we can't manage the situation we will decide to end her life. Gapeworm, virus, infection? That is why CDS could help. Have given her herbal parasite drops. Any other ideas very welcome. Thanks

In my notes at home concerning Chlorine Dioxide I have information on severe case protocol for cats and dogs by weight. For a 5 lb animal place 6 drops of sodium Chlorite (part A) in a glass cup. Add 4 ounces of distilled or filtered water to the glass cup and stir with a plastic spoon. Use a plastic syringe with ml marking extract 0.5 ml for a 5 lb animal and give orally every 15 minutes for severe cases for the first 2 hours . Then every hour for up to 10 hours. For a 10 pound animal you would use 1 ml.

I also have in my notes for a respiratory illness in chickens you can put 20 inactivated drops per gallon of fresh water. You can also mist their heads morning and night with Jim Humbles activated drops to 8 ounces distilled water.

Thanks OhioChicken fan. I have some sodium chlorite and activator in two separate bottles. So you are saying to use sodium chlorite without the acid activator? For a 2lb chicken I would use 0.2ml of the solution as you describe, is that right?

I now buy for myself 3000ppm CDS in a bottle since it is so much easier to use that the two part method, and smells a lot less. Generally seems to be an equivalence of one ml of this is 3 drops of sodium chlorite once activated. (I've seen a variation of between one and 7 drops in this figure). I'm doing my best to translate your advice into using CDS, but you are suggesting using non activated sodium chlorite, I'm not sure the equivalence, any idea?

The way I was thinking of working it out was using the Kalcker Protocol C which is 10ml CDS in a litre of water and taking 100ml per hour for an adult. So for a chicken perhaps 1ml. My felt sense is that this is too much. Kalcker mentions Protocol C for animals too. Your protocol is roughly the same dilution but giving the animal ten times less. I have decided to give her 0.4ml of Protocol C every few hours. So far so good!

My understanding…..and I am no expert. Learning just like you, but animals don’t need the activator because their stomach’s hydrochloric Acid will convert the sodium chlorite to chlorine dioxide.
And yes, if I am using it for myself I am using the 3000ppm CDS formula. I much prefer that.

I didn’t see animal information in my Kalckers book but in my book by Jim Humble it has a whole chapter. So if you have anymore questions I can see if it’s in the book. In his book he suggests dosage is always by weight of the animal, start with lower dosage and slowly increase. If at any time they seem worse decrease dosage by 50% and when showing improvement try increasing the dose gradually.
Hopefully that helps! So hard to see them sick.
