I was at our local farm stores swap meet this weekend in the market for a flock protector that would be ok around people as we have small kids. The idea is to let them free range while we are at work. Up to this point the hens have been restricted to the coop/run only unless we are home. I have 4-1.5 year old bantam hens and 3-4 month old Cuckoo Maran hens. Needless to say, Terri, our lead bantam, dislikes the Cuckoos with extreme prejudice. We found this guy at the meet. He is a 12 month old Sumatran. Well, a 12 month old 'mutt' Sumatran. He is a cross between a bantam and full sized Sumatran. The couple we bought him from bred for 2 years to get this color. He has thrown platinum and chocolate offspring. A funny thing happened when he found his new home. Suddenly, there is no more beef between the bantams and the marans. Is this a normal function for a flock that has a new rooster? I mean, it seems as though he's been here for years. Absolutely zero hate in the flock that is noticeable...
Sorry for the poor photo. How have the rest of you introduced a rooster to your flock?
