I'm off to the store to purchase material for sleeping roosts for my flock, and would love to have some suggestions from you as to what works best.

2 x 4. Mount it so the the 4 " side is the side they'd sit on. The extra surface area is more comfortable for them and allows them to cover their feet up better in the winter when it's cold.

I have two 2x4's and they seem to love it. It allows for them to roost flat footed, which chickens prefer as they are not like parrots that want to wrap their feet around a poll/branch. Mine are about 2 1/2 feet off the ground and the other is about 3 1/2 feet off the ground to allow for the smaller birds to get on the short one and the ones that can make it higher to get up higher. They love choices!

Good luck and have fun building

Plastic is too slick so PVC would not be a good choice.

Metal can get too cold in the winter.

I use pretty much nothing but 2x2s and my birds like them just fine. I don't see any need to give them four inch wide roosts.

.....Alan.

When I pruned my fruit trees in the winter I saved the biggest straightest branches and made roosts outta those in the run. They're always a point of interest by folks and always get rave reviews. The girls like them as well. I used Cherry wood, Fig wood and white birch.
