Okay, thanks for that! BTW what does 'go into a moult' mean? As you can see I am most definitely a novice!
 
Chickens (well, all poultry) lose their feathers annually (more about that later) and must regrow them. Moulting is tough on chickens, and not just because they might be chilly. Feathers are almost entirely protein, so upping the protein during moult is good for them. While they are regrowing their feathers, they rarely lay eggs.

A first molt generally doesn't bother them all that much and they don't lose all their feathers. This is about 8 or 9 months old. The next molt is generally a year later.
