Hi BYC. I am looking at getting 3 chickens soon with a DIY coop.

I am looking for some very friendly chickens, that lay eggs, but not everyday. 4 - 5 eggs per week from each chicken is fine.

I am located in Melbourne and want to keep my costs down.

I was looking at isa brown or rhode islands reds. I was also interested in a silkie as my little brother loves being around chickens.

Thank you!

If you want chickens that doesn’t lay a lot of eggs stay away from RIR and ISA Browns, 4-5 eggs a week are considered great layers. My Rhode Island are great layers sometimes lays 5-6 days a week.
Orpingtons, Speckled Sussex and Marans are friendly and will lay 3-4 eggs a week for you.

Speckled Sussex are notoriously friendly, moderate to good layers of pinkish eggs. Add a little "stunning" into the mix, and you've got a perfect bird! :D

Same goes for Marans, as well as producing a standout egg. I'll never be without.

Are you opposed to bantams? Very few large fowl breeds can compare with their tiny counterparts as far as personality goes. :)

Hello, I highly recommend a Buckeye. Sweet, deferential, good temperament. Lays about 4 eggs per week. Seems to get along with everyone. Good mouser, if you need one. She follows me around, knows her name and comes when called.Another great breed is the Silver Gray Dorking. A sweetheart. Lays a white egg 3-5x a week.
If I am not mistaken, both are endangered breeds.
