Choosing my imaginary rooster

We have a rescue Brahma that spent his entire life in a tiny box.

And he is a doll.

He's not people FRIENDLY, but he is gentle, lets me manhandle him (we've had him for about a week now so I haven't let our daughter really spend a HUGE amount of time with him just yet.)

I am officially a fan of Brahmas.. Love my Shiva.

(The breed is mellow anyway, but I *do* recognize that any bird that comes from *no* human contact and is as gentle as he is has to be extra special, but.. He definitely lives up to the expectation of the breed.)

I have a chantecler cockerel. I've culled my flock of extra cockerels twice and so far he is still alive and running with the gals. I like him a lot. He's gentle and is the only male that will eat from my hand.

He's young and not the alpha roo in the yard. I wish he were a bit beefier but I know he will ever be anywhere near the size of my cochin or my australorp and have to remind myself of that when making comparisons.

Sandhill preservation has chanteclers listed and I was thinking of maybe ordering some chicks from them in the spring. I have 3 red hens and the one cockerel... there were two but the other was culled out in the last group of roos to go.

I'm in northern Michigan and winter hardy is important for me. I really like that he has that small cushion type comb !!

Good luck with your choices. I suck at making choices, I confess I WANT IT ALL....lol

I agree.

I'd always heard that RIR roo's were notorious for being aggressive and having bad temperment.

Mine is as even tempered as my Buff Orpington roo.
My barred rock (Who is the alpha) Is great with people, will eat from your hand. He's also the fiercest protector I've ever seen.

I agree, I want to have at least one of each! And I wish I lived close enough for the donated brahma. My rescue roos, while not really crawl in your lap kind of guys, were very curious and would come running whenever I was out. They didn't love my kids but they didn't attack them either. However, we never had hens when they were with us so I don't know how much would have changed. My son, he loves all the animals and not much sets him back. My daughter is very hesitant and one mean rooster could easily turn her off chickens for good.

While my little corner of Massachusetts isn't as cold as lots of northern places, it still gets cold cold cold. So we need someone cold hardy. And I just love the looks of the brahmas and cochins. And while I doubt I will have the space and time in the near future to be a great chicken breeder, I will would still like to be able to hatch some of our own chicks at some point. And I just llike roosters!

I really appreciate all of you sharing your thoughts. If and when I am able to find someone to add to our flock you all will be the first to know!

rooster-red has seen my boys, all three of them. Suede, my Blue Orpington, is HUGE, but he is a big sweetie. He actually fell asleep in my lap when we were doing something with one of his feet.
Hawkeye is a Barred Rock, my buddy. He may have battle scars (from before I had him), but he is even tempered, laid back, but a wonderful protector for my girls.
Scout, my black Ameraucana, is also very sweet and friendly.
I've been fortunate with my boys and I adore them all.

I have only really had bantam cochin & silkie roos!

I found they are calm, cuddle sometimes come quicker than the girls!

I had such a great experience with them I was brave enough to get an Austrolorp Roo with my last batch of chickens he's 4 weeks now he is the first to come to me when I walk in the room!

They also mistakenly sent me a Brahma Roo so calm and gentle (I swore I would only have one regular size Roo didn't want the fighting & now I have 2)

These were all hand raised!

and of course when I hatch Suades babbies I will have to keep a Roo too!
