Christmas 2014 Hatch-a-Long (12-25-14)

It started leaking that nasty fluid, so I cracked it open and it was dead :\ But thanks for asking.

The one with the ruptured yolk is getting polyvisol till she can eat. She's still in a cup, I hope she does better then my last ruptured yolk chick

Thanks!

This is kinda weird, but my one chick from my last weeks chicks smells odd. I'm not worried, but when you hold her you can smell her, lol. It's a really 'fowl' smell :lau. I don't sniff baby chicks, so I'm not sure what they should smell like :p

No problem!

I know how you feel! I've always gotten my chicks between 1 day old to a month old and they always smelt fine. But these guys have a bit of a smell. And now the bator smells because of them.

I just introduced the chicks that are hatched and in the brooder water, some did not like the ides of their beaks getting wet, others figured it out really quickly. I think they will like the chick starter though, it will give them something to peck at.

Status update: Went and had dinner with some family, had 3 external pips when I left and had a feeling I would miss them. Two of them hatched while I was away, and the other is taking his sweet time. That makes six so far and one on the way. Both of my Ameraucanas have now hatched and I'm excited about this one because it's blue!!! Will keep you guys posted as the rest follow. Congrats to everyone else having successful hatches, and my condolences to the ones lost. Everyone have a Merry Christmas if I don't get a chance to post for a couple days, have a feeling I'll be busy tomorrow.

I have five hatched right now with three other pips. I moved two to the brooder that hatched earlier today. Two black ones and the ruptured yolk one are still hanging out in the bator.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Merry Christmas!

I've got 33 of 42 out, I'm wondering if two had died because no internal pip and they weren't moving, not giving up hope though. Looks like another will hatch today and then pretty much all the rest are pipped.... Now if only they hold off until past midnight.....

I have 2 external pips! I'm thrilled! But also a little nervous. It's only the end of day 19, so with them being early, I'm thinking my temperature might have been on the high end. I know that can bring on some problems like high mortality. But since all of you are having good success, and since its already going much better than my first hatch, I'm optimistic! Now I'll have more than one reason keeping me up tonight!

Congrats on your hatch. What are you gonna do with that many chicks? I really didn't think that 20 of my eggs would hatch, so now I'm looking at all these babies and wondering what I was thinking. Haha

I opened up the two eggs that didn't hatch. It looks like maybe they died right around day 17/18. Not sure why. One looked normal, just a little small with all of its yolk sac still out, and the other one was all mushy looking. Maybe bacteria got in there. Sad.

My weak chick seems to be better now. I can't really tell which one he/she is anymore.

Now to plan for the Valentines Day hatch-a-long.

Good Luck!
I purposely kept my temp a little on the low side (99.5 still air little giant) because I think that's one of the reasons for my previous bad luck. Mine still started pipping on day 19, and were all out by the end of day 20. They don't have any problems so I bet all yours will be just fine.

Thanks! You may be right! I just found one hatched! Right after midnight! And it wasn't even one of the two pips I saw. But it was the first one out!

I can't figure out how to send a pic!
