Christmas Charity, what do you do?

We sit down with the kids and pick out a special critter- it is very rewarding and my young kids really seem to get it. We have given bees, rabbits, part of a water buffalo and a bunch of others that I cant remember.

It's good to see so many people doing stuff despite the tight times.

Menagerie - my daughter's class is gathering money for a goat through the heifer project this year.

Well 2 things I did today. I gave away 250 disney movie rewards for toys for tots. Only have 25 points now. Then a guy in a pickup truck lost his front axel on his truck and I tired to help him with that but he called AAA and they towed him.

I'm kinda partial to the Relay for Life in the Summer and adopting a family/making a donation for our local Women's Shelter at Christmas time.

Every year before Christmas I make our kids go through their toys. I put a big box in the living room and they have to fill it. I tell them they cannot expect to get if they don't give and then we drop the box off (has to be good clean stuff!) at the homeless shelter in the city.

This year is going to be tighter for us than others in the past have been, but we are still extremely fortunate! The kids also did an adopt a family through girl scouts.

I am getting my college kids to help me do a little something special for the wounded at Bethesda.

There are SO many more people in need this year that the adopt a family program had to turn families away. The mission near us ran out of food Thanksgiving day. These are hard times for us all so thanks for giving what you can!

We give regularly to the local food pantry. They do so much more than food. They have a garden for clients, a store where clients get vouchers (and the public can shop), provide medical service, do Coats for Kids, help with utilities, provide hurricane relief and so much more. We also give to families in need at our school, and help with Blue Santa through the Cub Scouts, and we will be giving a flock of chickens through Heifer this year. I generally try to keep the money local, but people in need are everywhere.

Last year my mom and I did a quilting marathon and donated 10 quilts to a local nursing home. Lots of those folks don't have much or any family. We went with my mom's children's church group and let the kids each pass out a quilt to everyone and then sang christmas carols and visited with everyone for about an hour. It was fun....didn't do it this year cause my machine went down the tubes and I have to get a new one so I can get sewing again.

Just wanted to tell everyone our Girl Scout troop delivered the donations for our 'adopted' family tonight. I was amazed. Over the course of the last few weeks, we've received and delivered everything from quilts to small kitchen appliances to personal items, even a bed for the boy.

The mom of our family baked cookies for the girls today and we all stood around eating cookies and drinking punch. I think the family was pretty overwhelmed by everything. The girls were touched by the way this family has to live (meaning we ALL realized how easy we have it compared to some folks).

My mom donated two of her beautiful handmade quilts to the family, and I'll go to her house tomorrow to finish the last one up and will deliver it later this week.
