Well I went and met with the gentleman who is doing the rehearsal dinner for my son's wedding and the grounds and dinning room is just beautiful and tied up all the arrangements one more thing out of the way. So I'm planing on making 40 of those little bags in teal and cream (cream on the inside) have till Sept. to get them done. Now I am on the hunt for teal, I think I will do it in batiks or cotton what do you think or satin, make them the same or different colors as would be in batiks, mmmmmm more decisions. Ideas anyone,teal is the brides accent color,

I am assuming that you are talking about the little oriyage pouches. Sorry if you aren't ,cos the rest of this will make no sense! I was talking to one of our most experienced Quilter's this evening before I read your post, and she suggested using a softer fabric , rather than pure cotton. She has made these little bags with man made fibre fabrics, with a sheen on them. She said they looked more like the original Japanese. She is a tutor as well as a member of our group. Have a go with some bits of fabric you have around before you buy in the colours you want. Oh, and I have found that one of the rulers I happen to have is an equilateral triangle with sides of 8.5 inches. Maybe you can find one too if you are going to make a lot of these. Sounds good, whatever you are doing.

I will make one and see if that is the size I like and will play with fabric.

I have taken every ones suggestions on advisement and I'm going to go with a teal batik for the out side with a cotton sateen in cream or just satin for the inside, so now to play with some scrap fabric to see if the size in my book is what I would like to go with. will post pics.

My mug rug is finished except for the binding. I am going to try and do real binding on this one, like an adult quilter w/ mitered corners and all, wish me luck. It is nothing like I was going to originally do, but it is reversible.

I'm about to google it, I'll let you know if I run into trouble. I have made double diget quilts but never a real traditional binding.

I have made several mug rugs now and always put trad. binding on. On my first one I thought I would use a narrower strip1.5 " bad idea, I fought it all over the place. Now I use the regular 2.5" strips for mug rugs too. Just a hint for your first go round.

Well I don't know what I was worried about that went very smoothly. I did a 2 inch strip Rustyhen, would have followed your suggestion but had already finished when I saw it. I see more traditional binding in my future, but don't know if it would still be that easy on a full sized quilt. It ended up being much more "traditional" then I intended. But the pattern of the piecing is one of a kind made up in my head.

For a bed quilt, you'll want to use 2.5 inch strips. Attach to the front, fold over tightly, fold excess under and then whip stitch the back... all done and it will be doubled on both sides.
