I have 2 chukars that were hatched on or around June 6th of this year. Today, when I was feeding them, I saw a shelll-less egg in their pen. Is it possible that a chukar so young could be starting to lay already??

Im no expert but I would have to say no. are they caged under another type of bird? perhaps a coturnix? could have fell into thier cage? if you do have chuks laying at 8 weeks old I would LIKE some of thier eggs please!!! I need early laying birds... wink!

They are caged right next to some A&M's, but this 'egg' had no shell whatsoever, and only a small tear in the membrane. I suppose it is possible that they got an egg from the A&M's pen (the cages have 1"x1 1/2" wire on the sides), but I would think the egg would looked a bit more 'messed up', and be more (or less) than just the membrane.

interesting. I would observe for further information... Like I said if they are already laying I want some of those birds.... those are rapid laying chukar lines!!!! you could totally start a new birdie craze!!! you coud call the shellys quick chuks or speed chuks!!! sorry I am being goofy but I am serious too... I wish I had some that laid that young!

Hmm i have only had my Chukar for about a month/ month and a half. Half of the ones i bought were already laying when i bought them and the others are around 6 weeks of age. I say nothing is impossible. Cause i had one of my Golden Buff Sexlinks start laying at 3 and a half weeks of age. And if one of them is also starting to lay early it could be just cause it is her first egg? A couple of my eggs from my pullets have had thin shells, and came in odd shapes and stuff but i haven't had a egg without a shell yet. Good luck! hopefully it was just a onetime thing and you won't get anymore eggs like it.

Idk! Havent Had Chukar For Breeding Yet--- Hatched A Bunch, But Liquidated Them..... I Was Under The Impression That They Didnt Lay Until Nearly A Year Old???

I Have Had And Still Occaisionally Get A Shell-less Egg From 1 Of My Coturnix Girls(just The 1 Gal Does It, And She Throws 1 Out About Every 6-8 Wks, Lays Daily= Most Are Completely Normal And Very Fertile)--- Funny Looking Things! Kinda Like A Soft Leathery Ping Pong Ball

I've never gotten a shell-less egg from my coturnix (that I know of). I believe chukars start laying around 16-20 weeks, but don't normally start until their 2nd season (hatched in spring of '09, start laying in spring of '10).

I just don't know what to make of it! I also haven't had any coturnix eggs 'fall through' the wire, so I doubt it was one of the A&M's eggs. There wasn't one in there this evening, I'll look real close tomorrow morning when I feed.
