Hello, my daughter is obsessed with chickens and even created a PowerPoint persuasive presentation a few years ago to convince us to get chickens.. she is 12 now and we’ve had silkies, satins, and even a few hatchlings that all seemed to be multiple breeds in one so they kind of looked disjointed like Mr Potato Head.. we’ve lost some to predators, had malfunctions with solar-powered doors, and had a few surprise roosters that we had to rehome out of city limits (and found out it isn’t easy to find homes for roosters
… a few times we PAID someone at an animal sanctuary to take them.. when the raccoons came and the chickens didn’t find refuge in their reinforced coop, we lost her last beloved chickens and we were going to wait until spring to start with a new crew of hens.. but my daughter was so sad and so we went to a chicken swap and got young girls that were not old enough to lay yet (but old enough to have feathers instead of chick fuzz). 2 of the 3 perished (one was sick and died mysteriously in 24 hours and the other got disoriented with the snow and didn’t make her way into the warm coop) leaving us with one lonely hearty girl. They were all Orpingtons. So then a month later we went to the swap again to find her a grown coop-mate and ended up with a big laying Americana. But the Orpington was so scared of her that we had to separate them until it grew some more. So then we bought a portable coop to keep in garage.. but now she was back to being lonely. We didn’t want to chance losing any more to the cold and having a bossy hen might force her out into the cold.. so we were on our way to create an urban house that is being taken over by chickens. Because the Orpington was lonely, we decided to get 2 silkies since Christmas was coming and my daughter was dying for her fluffy butt friends.. and they could live in our warm garage with the Orpington (named Penny) until spring.. they became fast friends. fast forward to now and Penny is too rambunctious and big to live full time with her fuzzy fluffy coop mates Tilly and Lulu so now she’s back to the outdoor coop with Trixie, the Americana.
So as you can see, I unknowingly became attached to these little creatures and am kind of the surrogate caregiver. I am probably anthropomorphizing them a bit, but I refuse to lose another one if I can help it.. so now that Trixie, the big falcon-like Americana is sick, I’ve brought her up to my mountain house to keep an eye on her and that will be my main reason for coming here.. but wanted to give an intro. A ridiculously long intro. Hi everyone!
