We use citric acid to cut mineral build up on our watering line nipples in the layer barn. The birds actually drink more when it's being added to the water. I think they like the tangy taste.

It's also used in broiler production to improve feed conversion ratios. It improves mineral uptake by the birds.

A general rinse is all you need.

Not much. We actually meter it into the barn's watering system with an injector/proportioner. When the birds are drinking the water I use one pound per 129 gallons. When the birds are gone and I'm trying to really clean out the watering lines it's 2 to 3 pounds per 129 gallons which is pretty potent.

One pound in 129 gallons is only about an eighth of an ounce per gallon.

The barn I got my ducklings from sold me citric acid to put in the ducks' water as an immunity booster. 1 pinch per gallon of water. Anyone else heard of this? I know that citrus is bad for ducks, so I wanted to be sure.

Citric acid at concentrated levels can be too strong for chickens. Baking soda wash is smart especially if the barrel is becoming their water source. If it removes buildup of minerals, imagine how it could impact a small animal on average 5 to 7 lbs through their esophagus. ALWAYS Err on the side of caution. Glad to see the poster is cautious. Remember this is a blog and opinion based. Advice or opinion, while very well meaning...if not scientifically based, can still be bad advice.
