I'm glad you joined us!

Your bathtub set-up sounds like it would work. As for whether to get laying hens or chicks, I would recommend chicks, especially if you want them to be tame. Chicks are easy to handle and will be much friendlier than more mature birds.

You could definitely keep chicks in a bathtub until you have a coop. I usually keep my chicks in plastic tubs until they are four weeks or so, then move them to wire cages. They stay in those cages until they move out to the coop at about 8 weeks old.

I would recommend getting chicks. It is so much fun watching them grow up! Plus, you can handle them from a young age, which will result in tamer adult hens.

Glad you joined us. I agree, starting with baby chicks is the most fun. But do try and get sexed ones to lessen the chance of drawing a roo. I have six I got when they were 3 days old, started out in a large plastic storage box 2x4 feet and they outgrew that in just over a week…I think you could start with the tub you have and that will give you time to go larger if you need to. Some people tape boxes or plastic bins together. 5 Weeks is the earliest you can plan on for a move, so make sure the brooder is tall enough.

Do check out the Learning center articles on raising baby chicks to get ready for them.

For the coop, think larger, full size chickens will be about the size of a 5 gallon bucket. Get planning and starting the coop, 5-6 weeks comes quite fast.

Good luck & have fun.

So glad you could join our community!!

Baby chicks would not be ready for the coop yet and you will need to brood them until they are fully feathered or sometime around 5 to 6 weeks of age. Stop by this article in our learning center on how to brood and raise chicks for the first 60 days...https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/...ks-the-first-60-days-of-raising-baby-chickens

As for a coop, you can go with a prebuilt coop however you may find after time you want a bigger one. My first coop was a prebuilt coop and the chickens hated it and so did I. I had a hard time getting them to roost in it at night and they never used it as a shelter at all. They did lay their eggs in it, but that was it. LOL So we eventually built a much larger coop and the birds AND myself were so much more happy. Here is a link to our coops pages for some ideas....https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coops

Good luck with which ever coops or breeds you choose and if you have any questions along the way, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!
Wonderful Advice, and I second all of it!! Well said
