Chirping
Hello!
I’m new here and live in a smaller city outside of Seattle. We live a more sustainable life and have always wanted chickens. We recently got chicks a week ago and are currently building our coop/run.
We have 8 chicks. Sapphire olive eggers, blue maran, a buff Wyandotte, novagen, buff Orpington, a New Hampshire red, and a blue sapphire.
I’ve always wanted chickens. I’m big on composting/recycling our food scraps and we’ve been actively composting/trench composting in our city backyard for 2 years. I really wanted another way to recycle that material. Plus we grow a lot of our own food and are cognizant about where it comes from. So the combo of having our own eggs and knowing what they eat, etc was a big reason. Plus I absolutely love sharing food.. I work in food insecurity and I can’t wait to give away eggs. Maybe sell, but I’ll probably give away more than sell.
I love to garden, take the Jeep up to the mountains, camp, pottery.. we have a 6 year old daughter and she’s so excited about the chicks. She’s a big animal person and always a big helper. We have a dog. 8 yr old American Bully named Hashbrown. He’s an absolute ham and has been checking on the chicks several times a day to see if they’re ok. One of the chicks is super interested in him.
Our plan is to have a fully enclosed coop/run. We have a ton of feral cats around (& opossums/raccoons) and while our dog keeps them out of the yard a lot I don’t want any issues. Plus our neighbors of quail and I don’t want hens going over and saying hi.
I work in food insecurity in the non-profit sector. Food rescue and getting food to people is a major component of my life. My husband is a fire inspector up and down the I5 corridor.
I have a friend down in rural Oregon that has a farm and recommended this site for our new adventure.
