Hello!
I’m new here and live in a smaller city outside of Seattle. We live a more sustainable life and have always wanted chickens. We recently got chicks a week ago and are currently building our coop/run.

We have 8 chicks. Sapphire olive eggers, blue maran, a buff Wyandotte, novagen, buff Orpington, a New Hampshire red, and a blue sapphire.

I’ve always wanted chickens. I’m big on composting/recycling our food scraps and we’ve been actively composting/trench composting in our city backyard for 2 years. I really wanted another way to recycle that material. Plus we grow a lot of our own food and are cognizant about where it comes from. So the combo of having our own eggs and knowing what they eat, etc was a big reason. Plus I absolutely love sharing food.. I work in food insecurity and I can’t wait to give away eggs. Maybe sell, but I’ll probably give away more than sell.

I love to garden, take the Jeep up to the mountains, camp, pottery.. we have a 6 year old daughter and she’s so excited about the chicks. She’s a big animal person and always a big helper. We have a dog. 8 yr old American Bully named Hashbrown. He’s an absolute ham and has been checking on the chicks several times a day to see if they’re ok. One of the chicks is super interested in him.

Our plan is to have a fully enclosed coop/run. We have a ton of feral cats around (& opossums/raccoons) and while our dog keeps them out of the yard a lot I don’t want any issues. Plus our neighbors of quail and I don’t want hens going over and saying hi.

I work in food insecurity in the non-profit sector. Food rescue and getting food to people is a major component of my life. My husband is a fire inspector up and down the I5 corridor.

I have a friend down in rural Oregon that has a farm and recommended this site for our new adventure.

This is Hashbrown :)

Hi and welcome to BYC! You got GREAT chicken breeds!! What an amazing variety and a beautiful little flock!! Your dog is adorable! Posting chick updates as they grow is always fun, and this is a great place for advice!!
Thank you! We’re so excited! I basically stalked all the feed stores in the county to get the breeds I wanted 🤣

I completely understand that!! Did you get them all in one day ? The sane store? And can you post pics when you get a chance? Do they have names?
No I got them over a week. I got 6 last Friday. The OGs. But we lost one over the week span. She got pasty butt and then went downhill all in a day. My daughter was devastated. We added 3 more last night. The feed store had the Sapphire olive eggers and the blue sapphire (a lighter one). I really wanted these so I got the last 2 olive eggers and a blue sapphire. I’ll get picks of the chicks today when I do a deep clean out. I’m using a brooder heating pad instead of a light. So the OGs are getting feathers fairly fast. My Blue maran is the biggest with the most feathers and probably the loudest chick. I retro fitted our huge dog kennel for them. I’m going to switch them to a nipple water in the next week or so.

Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies! I always check in the "What's New" section as well at the top of this page. This way I can read how I may have a similar question or help give some advice.
