City of La Marque

Hi all,

I have a friend who has chickens and loves it. I am very interested in getting 2/3 hens for my family but don't know if City of La Marque allows chickens. You're assistance is greatly appreciated!

Sec. 8-8. - Keeping animals and fowl within 100 feet of an occupied building under certain conditions prohibited.

It shall be unlawful for any person to maintain or keep any animal or fowl within 100 feet of an occupied building in such a manner as to create noise or conditions of sanitation which are offensive, disturbing or annoying to persons of normal sensibilities, or in a manner which unreasonably interferes with such person's normal habits and mode of living.

Section 8-13 about public nuisance says chickens running at large are equally offensive as dogs running at large. So...if your property is big enough and your neighbors are not easily offended, seems like you are in good shape. You might want to search more in the municode site for your city. I suggest searching for livestock, fowl, chicken, avian, bird etc. as sometimes the code will use different words for the same topic.

I realized one other generally useful strategy: call your local code enforcement officer and ask They are likely to find out eventually, so you might as well start off asking their advice on the topic. I've found most of those folks to be very helpful when they are called for advice in advance. My experience is that it's especially useful to ask which rules are firm and which can be bent.
