Howdy! I'm new here in chicken town. Purchased my first chickens just this spring. I wanted cute, friendly happy chickens to lay some healthy eggs for me. What a fascinating experience! My Dad, an old farmer calls me a City Slicker and my chickens Computer Chickens! From keeping the lil peepers warm to where the heck do I put them now! Thank you BYC for your great advice. I avoided lots of mistakes. I had nothing set up and no knowledge. Boy do I have stories to tell! It got really HOT here (108) suddenly, so I got real smart real fast on how to keep chickens cool. I'm having a ball with them! Hope they start laying soon! Question: My City Slicker Computer Chickens don't seem to enjoy veggies from my garden. I wanted them to have a natural diet. Any help?

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Did your dad raise chickens in the past? I think things have changed for raising chickens as much as things have changed for raising kids, lol. Times and methods change.

Here is a link to a list of healthy treats (and ones to avoid):

I'm not sure how much of their diet you want "natural" or if you're looking for a supplement to their regular feed but hope it helps.

Glad you're having fun with your birds, if you need any help, just post. There is a ton of information available here and some really friendly, helpful people.

Thank you! I have 1000 questions! Dad...83. he has fond memories of his childhood chickens. His fav was a pet silver laced wyandotte, so I got one of those. He's loving the new chickens and it really gives him purpose. He raised chickens and worked on a turkey farm, so he's not used to this urban thing LOL. He teases the heck out of me. I'll check the treat chart. Thanks a bunch! Where should I post my questions? Do I click on the forum navigator?

Yep, when you want to post a question click on the Forum tab to see all of them. Or even quicker, just hover over it and the drop down will show up.

I love that your dad gets to re-experience poultry again, maybe from a slightly different angle but still, you got one of his favorites, that's sweet. Enjoy your chickens and enjoy your Dad enjoying the chickens...that's an awesome way to make some great memories.

Well yes it's that crazy hot. Scary hot. That is a Buff sitting on a block of ice! We had sudden record breaking temps here in Riverside. (1/2 way between LA and Palm Springs) 108. Panicked this new mom! I bought block ice, froze H20 bottles to put in their waterers and put frozen bottles all over for them to lay on. Also a big fan and refrigerated watermelon.. My girls were fine. I can now say that I'm an expert at cool chickens and clueless about lots of other chicken stuff. Summers here hover at about 100.
